Innovation at St. Luke’s: Curiosity, Creativity, and Courage in Action

At St. Luke’s Episcopal School, innovation isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a mindset. While some might associate innovation with the latest tech tools or digital trends, here at St. Luke’s, it’s grounded in something deeper: curiosity, creativity, and the courage to explore the unknown.

This school year, we’re proud to introduce the St. Luke’s Innovation Team, a group of educators dedicated to making learning more engaging, meaningful, and connected to the real world. Their mission? To empower students and teachers to experiment with new ideas, tools, and approaches that inspire growth and spark a lifelong love of learning.

What Innovation Looks Like at St. Luke’s

Innovation at St. Luke’s can take many forms:

  • A classroom buzzing with energy as students collaborate on a hands-on project
  • A teacher encouraging big questions and bold ideas
  • Students taking risks, learning from setbacks, and discovering that failure is often the first step toward success
  • Lessons that blend subjects, grade levels, and even extend beyond the classroom walls
  • Creative use of technology, outdoor learning, and real-world connections that bring education to life

At its core, innovation here means:

  • Curiosity driving learning
  • Creative problem-solving and out-of-the-box thinking
  • Hands-on experiences that bridge classroom learning with the real world
  • Collaboration across disciplines and grade levels
  • Courage to try, fail, learn, and grow

Innovation Already in Action

Across campus, students are already embracing innovation in exciting ways:

  • In 4th grade, students in Mrs. Mertz’s class recently designed and tested their own safety belts. Working in teams, they learned from their mistakes and saw firsthand how iteration leads to improvement.
  • In Middle School, Mr. Robinson’s students are bringing creativity and leadership to life through a student-produced news show, Python programming, and 3D printing projects.
  • In the Early Years Innovation Lab, our youngest learners—PK3 through 4th grade—are diving into inquiry-based learning. This unique space, designed by Beth Hawkins and Sari Weller, offers evolving experiences that nurture curiosity and give children a voice in their learning. Research shows that when young children feel empowered in the learning process, deeper understanding takes root.

Through these experiences, St. Luke’s students are developing essential 21st-century skills: critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, adaptability, and more.

At St. Luke’s, tradition and innovation go hand in hand. By honoring our roots and embracing forward-thinking approaches, we’re preparing students not just to navigate the future—but to shape it.
