St. Luke’s “Super Readers” Shine at Texas Book Festival

St. Luke's was well-represented at this year’s Texas Book Festival, as 15 students helped announce the 2017-2018 Texas Bluebonnet Award Nominees in Austin on Saturday, November 5th. SLES has had the most student “super reader" presenters at the book festival for the past two years.  St. Luke's emphasizes public speaking through its required declamation program beginning in the 1st grade, so opportunities such as the book festival give the students a chance to use their polished oratory skills. "We love introducing the Bluebonnet nominees," enthused one of the St. Luke's presenters. "It's so exciting because we've read most of the books, and they are awesome!"

The Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List is chosen by the 10-member TBA selection committee, including St. Luke’s librarian Mary Milligan. Milligan is serving her final year of a 3-year term on the committee alongside librarians from all across Texas.
