Members/Bios

Amy Martin (2009) Chair 2007-09
Amy and her husband, Bradley, have been St. Luke’s parents for 13 years. Amy’s three step-children, Andrew, Alexa, and Henry all graduated from SLES. Amy and Bradley have a son, Hawkin, who will be in the 6th grade and a daughter, Hunter, who will be in the 5th grade at St. Luke’s in the fall. Amy has chaired and/or served on many committees at St. Luke’s over the past several years such as: Field Day Chair, Outdoor School Coordinator, Auction Party Chair, Parent Council Vice President 2002-2003, Parent Council President 2004-2005, Sally Foster Gift Wrap Chair, Book Fair volunteer, and room parent. She has served on the St. Luke’s Board of Trustees for the past four years. She received her B.A. in Education at Texas State University and is co-owner of Le Chateau Antiques & Design. She serves as Secretary on the Board of International Evangelism Association and travels around the world organizing discipleship conferences with her husband, the Association’s Chairman. Amy and her family are members of San Antonio Baptist Church.

Jill Vassar (2011) Vice Chair 2008-09
Jill is an organizational development consultant to a social service agency and a former Vice President of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation.  She has served St. Luke’s Episcopal School in many capacities, most recently as the 2007-08 Parent Council President.   She is chairing the Head of School Search Committee.  Other community leadership includes the Boards of the Cancer Center Council, the Founder’s Council of the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, the Summer Dreams Foundation, and the former Baptist Hospital System Associates’ Council.  Jill and her husband, George, a urologist, are the 2008 Witte Museum Game Dinner Chairs.  They are active members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, where she serves as a Godly Play instructor and lay reader, and former Vestry member.  Jill is a member of the Executive Board of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas and chaired the Centennial Diocesan Council in 2004.  Jill and George are the proud parents of St. Luke’s students Margaret (6th) and Caroline (2nd).  She graduated cum laude from Wellesley College and is the President of her class. 

Ann D. Wells (2010) Treasurer 2008-09
Ann has been a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church since 1966 and has served on the Vestry, as Vestry Treasurer, and as President of the Women of St. Luke’s.  Her first SLES Board service began in 1984, and her current service began in 1994.  She has been Chair (1988-89 and 2004-06), Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary, and she served as Co-Chair of the 1996 Head Search Committee.  She is a CPA in public practice and is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.  Her children, David and Laura, are graduates of SLES.  Her other Board experience includes Morningside Ministries and the Children’s Shelter.

Richard Duncan, (2010) Secretary 2008-09
Richard and Robin are members of SLEC and have a daughter and three sons in SLES, Lucy (pre-k3), Asher (kinder), Nigel (3rd), and Avery (4th). Richard is a real estate and banking attorney with his own firm. He graduated from Hotchkiss (1973), Washington & Lee (BA 1978) and UT (MBA 1980 and JD 1985). Richard has provided pro-bono legal work for a number of religious organizations in the San Antonio community.

Larry Martin (March 2009) Church-School Liaison
Larry is a long-time resident of San Antonio.  Larry serves as Sr. Vice President-Investments with Smith Barney in downtown San Antonio.  He has had an active interest in St. Luke's School for twenty years.   Three grandchildren began at St. Luke's at two-years of age. Two granddaughters have been graduated by St. Luke's Middle School; Annie McAllister was a member of the first graduating class, her sister, Sallie, was a member of the succeeding class.  Larry was a member of the development team whose purpose was the funding of the Middle School.  He is an active member of St. Luke's Church, having served the Parish as Senior Warden, and is a current member of the Vestry where he has served for two years on the St. Luke's School Board as Church/School Liaison.

Donna Basse (2009) Parent Council President
Donna has been a member of the St. Luke’s school community for five years. She is a native of Dallas, Texas and has been married to Scott for fifteen years and they have one son, Dillon (Nine years). Donna has served on numerous school committees. She served as Vice President of Communications, Parents Assisting Teachers (PATS), Parent Council President Elect and currently Parent Council President. She has also served as a Cub Scout leader at St. Luke’s for four years and treasurer for three years. Donna is the Treasurer for the Lewis Ranch Homeowners Association (1998-Current). In the past, she has served the insurance industry on the General Agents and Managers Association (GAMA) Board and chaired the AMTC (twenty three week course) and FMS classes. She was appointed Ambassador for Kansas City Life liaison with GAMA. She has been a member of San Antonio Association of Life Underwriters (SAALU) and American Health Insurance Association (AHIA) and is currently a member of the San Antonio Association of Health Underwriters (SAAHU). She currently manages Barse Financial Group (1993-Current).

The Rev. Raymond E. Cole, Interim Rector
Since retirement in 2004, Ray has been asked by the Bishop to serve as interim rector of three different congregations. St. Luke’s is his third assignment. He has also been appointed to serve as the Bishop’s Deputy for Episcopal Schools. After ordination in 1963 he served congregations in the dioceses of Pennsylvania and Chicago, coming to San Antonio as rector of St. George in 1996. Ray and Keena (the former Cornelia Cox of Corpus Christi) met in New York City during Ray’s senior year at The General Theological Seminary. Married in 1963, they have three sons: Raymond III and twins, Chris and Craig. Keena works part time for the World Missions department of the Diocese.

Shirley Berdecio Head of School
Shirley has been Head of School at SLES since 1997 and has been in education for over 30 years. Shirley received a B.A. and an M.S. from Our Lady of the Lake University with certification in mid-management administration (PK – 12) and as a professional counselor. Shirley is married to James and together they have two grown sons and a granddaughter, Tatiana.

Ted Burkhart (2009)
Ted has been a member of SLEC since 1997. He has served on SLEC Vestry 1999 – 2003 and as Senior Warden during his last 2 years on the Vestry. Ted served as Stewardship Chair for 1998 and 2005, Chair – Endowment Committee, Member – Columbarium Committee, and Member Rector Search Committee 2008.  Episcopal Diocese of West Texas: Executive Board 2005-2008, Treasurer 2007-2008, Chair - Finance Committee, Chair – Department of Stewardship, Chair – Mission Engagement Committee, Trustee and Secretary – Diocese of West Texas Foundation, Trustee - Church Corporation, Member – Lay Ministry Commission. Ted co-chairs the United Way of San Antonio Stewardship Review Team. Ted is Senior Vice-President/Financial Advisor for UBS Financial Services. Ted and his wife, Weetia, have a daughter, Traci Burkhart Gomez, who is Executive Director of The Children's Bereavement Center of South Texas.

Brooke Dudley, (2009)
Brooke and his wife Betsy have a proud connection with St. Luke’s School through their granddaughters, Annie and Cita Atwell. Brooke is an educational consultant and works with families to help find the right schools and programs for their children. He has worked in education for over 36 years and has held numerous offices and positions in a variety of organizations. Brooke has also been a partner in two firms that provide management consulting services to independent schools. He has served on the boards of several schools and related organizations. He is a graduate of Colgate University.

Diane Greiner (2009)
Diane has been a member of SLEC since 2002. She earned a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and an M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine. She completed her cardiology training while on active duty with the Air Force, and now works in private practice as a cardiologist with South Texas Cardiovascular Consultants. She teaches Sunday School at SLEC and serves on the Nursery Committee and the Passing on the Faith Committee. She and her husband, Michael, have two children at SLES – Mikayla is in 3rd grade and Garrett is in 1st.

James L. Hayne, Jr. (Jaimie) (2009)
Jaimie is CEO of Catto & Catto LLP, an insurance, risk management and employee benefits agency.  Jaimie is also actively involved in a number of community organizations including Christ Episcopal Church and the Young Presidents' Organization.  Jaimie graduated Washington & Lee University with a History degree, obtained an M.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin and is a Certified Insurance Counselor.  Most importantly, Jaimie and his wife, Allison, have 3 children who attend St. Luke's: Claire (6th grade), Ana (5th grade) and Sarah (2nd grade). 

Almeda Hodge (2011)
Almeda has been a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church since 1957 and is a former SLES student. She has served several terms on the Board of Trustees, holding the offices of Chair, Secretary and Parents Council Chair and co-chaired the 1996 Head Search Committee. She holds a B.A. from Southern Methodist University and is a former Spanish and French teacher at her alma mater Alamo Heights High School. She also worked for 13 years in the Spanish Department of StarNet Satellite Network, a distance learner provider. She and her husband Ed are parents of two SLES graduates, Ned (29) and Chris (28). Almeda and her husband are both active with several St. Luke’s Church committees as well as numerous community boards and organizations.

Claude Koontz (2011)
Claude and his wife, Jessica, members of St. Luke's Episcopal Church since 1999, have two children, both of whom are SLES students. Claude is president of Austin, Calvert & Flavin, a San Antonio-based investment advisory firm and has worked in the financial services sector for over 20 years. Claude is president of the St. Peter - St. Joseph Children's Home Board of Governors and is active in local organizations such as Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement, and Little League.  Claude received a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.B.A. from Tulane University. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Marlene Merritt (2009)
Marlene has been a member of SLEC since 1997 and has served on Vestry as the Church/School Liaison from 2000 to 2003 and a one year term from 2003 – 2004. She has also served on several committees at SLEC. Marlene worked for IBM Corporation for a number of years. She served in various capacities including being selected to be the first female marketing representative for IBM in the northwest of the US. She also served in marketing management, corporate executive education, and customer strategic planning. Presently she has a small commercial real estate company. Marlene is active in the community and is on the following boards: Warm Springs Foundation, American Diabetes Association, Alamo Heights Rotary Club, and District Rotary Organization.

Julie Perez (2010)
Julie and her husband, Bobby, have three children who attend SLES – Christopher in 7th grade, Brianna in 5th grade, and Nicholas in 4th grade. Julie earned a B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin and a J.D. from St. Mary’s School of Law. Julie is a partner with the law firm of Oppenheimer, Blend, Harrison and Tate, Inc., where she practices part-time. Julie has been vice president of SLES Parent Council twice, as well as served in various other positions with the SLES Parent Council.

Rollins Rubsamen, Jr (2010)
Rollins is married to Heather Maverick Rubsamen and they have two sons who attend St. Luke's Episcopal School; Brandon, 8, and Colton, 5. Rollins is a native of San Antonio where he attended Alamo Heights High School and graduated from Texas A&M in 1983 with a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering and a Commission in the U.S. Army. Rollins is a partner and Senior Investment Consultant with The Quantitative Group; a boutique consulting firm that oversees the investments for a select group of families and institutions throughout the state.

Ben Vaughan IV (2011)
Ben grew up in Austin and graduated from St. Stephen’s School. Ben and his wife, Catherine, have three children all of whom attend SLES – Rachel in 5th grade and twin boys, Daniel and Patrick, in 2nd. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley. Ben teaches economics at Trinity University.
