At St. Luke’s, we believe that education is a quest for intellectual development, for personal growth, and for the fulfillment of the potential inherent in each student. A whole array of enrichment classes, such as art, music, chess, Spanish, computer, P.E., and library provide our students with experiences that give them a complete view of the world. It has been said that St. Luke’s creates Renaissance children – children who have been introduced to the arts and sciences and are conversant in a wide variety of subject areas.
PK3-4th Grade Curriculum Guide
Texas Journeys Language Arts Program/Spalding
St. Luke’s uses the Texas Journeys Language Arts program (grades 1st – 8th) and Spalding phonics (grades 1st and 2nd), enhanced by the study of literature in both fiction and nonfiction genres. The Accelerated Reading Program supports the school’s reading curriculum by providing self-paced comprehension assessment through computer testing. Accelerated Reader is also designed to encourage enthusiasm and interest for independent reading.
Singapore Mathematics
Singapore Math emphasizes the development of strong number sense, excellent mental math skills, and a deep understanding of place value. It is designed to provide more in-depth coverage of concepts and the mastery of skills through carefully sequenced lessons. The curriculum is based on a progression from concrete experience – using manipulatives – to a pictorial stage, and finally to the abstract level or algorithm. Singapore Math emphasizes model drawing, a visual approach to solving word problems that helps students organize information and solve problems in a step-by-step manner. In essence, the framework of the program nurtures an appreciation for math as a powerful tool in everyday life, while building successful mathematicians with strong computational, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.

Core Knowledge
The Core Knowledge Sequence details specific content and knowledge in all curricular areas at all grade levels. The curriculum at the elementary level is a shared, specific, sequenced, and a solid outline of significant information to be taught in language arts, history, geography, mathematics, science, and the fine arts. The Core Knowledge Sequence at St. Luke’s Episcopal School is a program that methodically builds a knowledge base that students are able to apply to all future learning.
VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies)
VTS introduces children to the world of art. It exercises a student’s higher level thinking skills and encourages creativity. It also builds vocabulary and lets students express their opinion in a very safe and non-threatening atmosphere.
