Dear St. Luke’s Community,
Welcome to our new monthly E-Newsletter. The life of St. Luke’s is rich and full, and we hope this monthly communication will give you a glimpse of all that happens once the students have waved goodbye at morning carpool.

Kindergarten meets with Dr. Reford
Kindergarteners invited Dr. Reford to meet with them so they could ask him questions about his daily life. Some of the questions asked were ‘What is your favorite food?’, ‘What is your dog’s name?’, ‘What is your favorite color?’, ‘What is your favorite sport?’, ‘What is your favorite computer game?’ |

4th Grade
Fourth graders conducted hands-on labs using scientific processes to build and communicate explanations during their unit on electricity and magnetism. Working in cooperative groups, scholars learned ways to operate two or more components in a system. They constructed parallel and series circuits and recorded the designs using schematic diagrams. Furthermore, students simulated the research and development department of a decorative-light manufacturer by putting their knowledge of parallel and series circuits to work in order to solve customer complaints and make recommendations for manufacturing guidelines. |

Sports
St. Luke’s Tigers have begun the sports year with football, volleyball, soccer and cross country. Soccer games are moving forward and the team is working hard. Volleyball has had a tremendous turn out of players with 44 girls playing. Football has started its second season and the team has improved tremendously since last year with games that are packed with energy, grit and high scores. Cross country has the largest turn out of students ever. It is a young team that shows tons of promise. Go Tigers! |

Fall Auction Party 2011
Fall Auction Party 2011 was September 30th. This year we had a new venue – the Witte Museum! With entertainment by the Rick Cavender Band, and food catered by Don Strange, we threw an amazing Live Auction to include a trip to the Cotswolds, England, a seven-night stay in Puerto Vallarta, Head of School for a Day, Rodeo Vet for a Day, and a Courtyard Hounds concert package! As always, our teachers stepped up with their ‘Teacher Packages’, which sold for big bucks. A big THANK YOU to Tracee Feik and Jody Lutz for throwing an amazing party!

Technology Update
The Chris Jones Middle School students have a new elective this semester. The ‘Computer Design and 3D Printing’ elective combines cutting-edge technology with sculpture and design. Earlier this year St. Luke’s became the only school in South Texas to build a MakerBot Thing-O-Matic – a 3D printer. After arriving in nearly 2000 parts, Michael Zeigler, St. Luke’s Director of Technology, put the Thing-O-Matic together over the summer so that his students would be able to create everything from a functional whistle to chess pieces. “The MakerBot combines art and technology in a way that allows students to unite their love of art and design with their passion for new and innovative technologies,” Zeigler said.
